Or should i say toys? Pwnage Tool is added to greenpois0n and limera1n. So now anyone can update their iOS devise without updating the baseband. Apple TV 2 even added to it’s mighty pwnage!

iPhone is about to SHAtter!
Ever since @pod2g discovered a new bootrom exploit we’ve all been patiently waiting for an update to our favorite tools. Well, @MuscleNerd announced today that a beta of PwnageTool has already been developed to utilize the exploit. @chronicdevteam has tools in the works as well. Though i anxiously await the release of @greenpois0n, it is PwnageTool that will allow me to update my iPhone4 without endangering my baseband and killing my unlock.
What does this mean to you? well, i’ll tell you since you asked. It means that EVERY iOS devise ALL A4 devices (iPhone 4, Tough 4g, iPad, Apple TV 2) will be jailbreakable regardless of iOS version. This is good news for anyone who “accidentally” updated or who purchased their device after apple fixed the jailbreakme.com exploit. Now although this exploit cannot be fixed with an iOS update, it is still very important to back up your shsh blobs to ensure that you can utilize the tools that all these guys have worked so hard on. Don’t get too excited. No new baseband exploit has yet been announced, so all you unlockers running 4.0.2 or greater are still doomed. lets hope they’re sitting on one for 4.2 or it’s going to be a cold and lonely winter.
Updates Ho! Updates: No!
new iOS and PS3 updates today! keep away if you like jailbreak. iPhones may loose unlock forever (or until a new baseband exploit is published). iOS at least gives us some features while PS3 update is nothing more the jailbreak stopping.
Apple Announced. . . blah blah blah whatever.
Those of you who don’t know, apple announced a few new toys a couple of days ago. my lackluster post is due mostly to the underwhelming release. Mostly announcing features that have been obviously lacking since the iPhone first hit the scene over 3 years ago.
Among their offerings is Apple TV: a cheaper apple tv with a smaller footprint and no storage. Designed to promote more rentals from the apple store, most of the exciting features are “Coming Soon” undoubtedly to coincide with iOS 4.1 or 4.2. New iPod Touch with everything you’ll find on iPhone 4 except for GPS, (because that might actually be useful). Cool to see FaceTime on the iPods though. New Shuffle combines the inovations of the last model with the usability of earlier ones. The Nano was a mixed bag. joining the iOS family with this version they remove it’s camera and video playback capability. It is unclear if it will ever get the benefits of iOS such as apps. Touch screens are cool, but if there aren’t apps, i’d rather have buttons and play videos. Lastly, iTunes 10. As if iTunes wasn’t a bloated POS already, now it is it’s own social network: Ping. Caught between wanting to be blip.fm and last.fm, Ping offers me nothing but more iTunes Store Spam. At least i hear they’ve finally added some threading. My biggest complaint about previous iTunes is that it does so much and often gets a little shall we say “Pinwheely.” It’s usually when i’m importing new tracks or syncing/restoring an iDevice. Of all it’s many features, the ONE thing i EXPECT itunes to do is control my music! at that, it often fails. Let’s see if this new version will improve their already abysmal record.
Jailbreakers or Unlockers Note: iTunes is safe, but you will want to hold off on the inevitable iOS updates. if you saved your blob you can always go back, but not with your baseband, so unlockers should especially be careful.
Look ma, it runs android!
I finally got around to installed android on my old 2g. Thanks to the hard work from the guys over at http://iphodroid.com/ it’s easier then ever. here is a film i made of it booting up, enjoy. iphone-2g-boots-android or iphone-2g-boots-android-small.
since there is very little documentation on this, here is some quick advice:
- Run 3.1.2 (not 3.1.3)
- jailbreak with redsn0w or pwnagetool (not spirit).
- install OpenSSH (leave default password)
iOS Updated, exploit patched!
OK it happened, iOS update to fix the glaring security hole expertly utilized by jailbreakme.com. i hope you have your blobs by now. no new features so stay away. hurry up and grab your blobs, apple is still signing 4.0.1 and 3.2.1 (for now)
Life on the straight and narrow
My life without a jailbroken phone. . . A return to playing by the rules.
The jailbreak for my new iPhone 4 has not yet been published. So I’ve been forced to spend the last few days living within the confines that apple deems acceptable use of my phone. It’s been harder then i thought. Even though many of my favorite jailbreak apps are still not compatible with iOS 4, there are a few things i realize i miss dearly. Some other mac geeks that disapprove of my whole jailbroken lifestyle think i’m better off. I’m here today to enumerate the most pressing reasons i prefer a jailbroken iPhone. Before i start, a disclaimer. . . it is easier for me with my many other iOS devices at the ready, so i won’t get into the many networking diagnostic tools are very useful for me with work. I will simply state the many features, apps, and interface enhancements that i have come to expect from my iPhone.
Saurik’s Cyntact: i was surprised at just how much i missed seeing my contact photos in the list. I paid $1 to the man eons ago for this little hack just to support him for all his efforts that he doesn’t charge for. Now i find myself missing it most of all.
Spektro’s Notify: i thought for sure apple was going to steal this one right up. I wish they had. Without it’s handy icons and reminder sounds, my new messages often go completely unnoticed. It lights up icons on the title bar to quickly inform you when you have new txt, email, or voicemail messages.
Big Boss’s SBSettings: Worth it for brightness alone. It’s convenient info screen and customizable toggles also allow me to quickly turn on and off resources and services for battery, privacy or other reasons. Resources like wifi or gps or even applications that need to be shut down.
ZodTTD’s Emulators: NES, SNES, and now Playstation! It’s just what i need to get my Kong on at the DMV or while baby sitting status bars.
Yiller’s Firewall IP always reveals what my apps are talking about. You’d be surprised how many apps go phoning home about you. Do you know what they are saying? Phone number, GPS info, anything can be beamed to whomever while you use your flashlight app.
Realize that this is only the tip of the glacier that is the jailbroken/homebrew community. Especially with the sales of commercial projects like MyWi which allow you to transform your iPhone into a wireless access point and inspell, spell check above and beyond what apple eventually integrated. The future for jailbreak is bright. The wait, will hopefully not be much longer. Thanks again to everybody who makes it possible. (MuscleNerd, planetbeing, saurik, and comex to name a few)
iOS Updates!
New iOS versions today. as usual, stay away if you like unlocks. I thought I’d have more time to back up my blobs (still waiting for delivery). I hope this doesn’t effect my jailbreakability. I’d hate to have a new phone that I can’t use due to software limitations.
UPDATE:
@comex reports that there is no significant change in 4.0.1 and nothing exploit, jailbreak, or unlock related was effected.
