An Air Raid Siren Woke Me Up This Morning. . .

Air Raid Siren 121 on Burbank BlvdSeriously, at 6:30am approximately. I was ripped from my slumber more confused then annoyed. Trying to figure out what it was. Not a car alarm, no modern alarm at all, but the rolling wail of sirens past.  The only thing I could think of was the cold war era air raid sirens that have dotted the San Fernando Valley landscape.  It rang out again at approximately 10:30am.  We also remember hearing something last night at approximately 11pm.  I drove down to the nearest to have a look and snap this photo.  It looked just as derelict as always.  No sign of hooligans.  I may never have answers.  According to the internet this emergency system hasn’t been used since a test in the mid 80s.  Anyone else have a clue?

Throwback Thursday – be3n’s boyhood home!

be3n boyhood room 4upI found more pictures of my old bedroom recently.  Below, I cleared out my bed to install a pull out sofa (seen in next frame).  It turned my high school room into quite the hangout.  Also on display were some art and other decorations from that era.  If you look closely, you can find Pez, impressionists paintings, comics, Magic packs, and a Sun optical mouse/mousepad.  I wonder what others will find.  My room’s walls were quite the collage.  I’ve added more pictures including this 4up from my Nickelodeon Photo Blaster.  Can you find Audio/Video tapes next to the original Nintendo?  enjoy.

How long does it take to register a Somali domain?

Flag of Somalia I thought of a great domain for a website Forest was planning.  Perfect timing for a great present. . . or so I thought.  This has thus far been the slowest registration processes I have ever endured.  Hopefully I will have it this year.   I have purchased so many domains that I am accustomed to measuring in minutes.  It has been all day!  where’s my .so domain!  I have to find out eventually.  I’ll certainly add more soon.

UPDATE!
Purchased Saturday 10pm.
Running by Monday 10am.

Wowza! I just mined a block!

It finally happened!  I have been mining bitcoins for almost two years now. casually. I joined a pool in the last year (after 6 months of nothing) I am not trying to make a living with this, I just had an OpenCL card in a system that is already on 24/7. I wanted some BTC to play with. I had a bet with myself once the tiny earnings from the shared pool started to come in. Would I earn 50 BTC with the pool before finding a block? In a shared pool, you don’t collect the blocks you mine, but instead share in the blocks of all contributing members. Blocks originally were worth 50 BTC. Just recently, the payout was reduced to 25 BTC for a block. This is particularly funny because I had already mined approximately 35 BTC with the shared pool before I finally hit up on a block. Obviously I squeaked out a victory in my little experiment, but it is really just a roll of the dice.
